AI mock vs human mock interview: when to use each
AI mock interviews and human mock interviews both make you better, but they are good at different things. The question is not which is better - it is which to use, and when.
Here is an honest comparison, plus a simple way to combine them before a real interview.
What an AI mock interview is good at
An AI mock shines when you need reps and fast, structured feedback. It is the cheapest way to move from "I have an answer" to "I can deliver it fluently."
- Volume: practice ten times without scheduling anyone
- Availability: rehearse late at night before an interview
- Consistency: the same rubric every session, so you can compare
- Instant, specific feedback on communication and answer quality
What a human mock interview is good at
A human mock is worth spending on closer to the real interview, once your answers are already fluent, to pressure-test them.
- Realism: body language, interruptions, and unstructured back-and-forth
- Calibration: a person's read on whether you would pass
- Networking: a connection or a referral
- Judgement calls an AI is not set up to score
Where an AI mock falls short
Be honest about the limits. An AI mock rehearses the conversation: it does not replicate a live coding editor loop, and it does not create the same social pressure as a person in the room. It is tuned to practice, not to judging your fit for a specific company's bar.
How to combine them
- Use AI mocks early and often to build fluency and fix weak answer patterns.
- Use the feedback reports to close one habit at a time.
- Book a human mock once your answers are solid, for realism and calibration.
- Go back to AI mocks for extra reps on anything the human mock flagged.
A rough schedule
If your interview is in two weeks, run AI mocks on most days for volume and book one human mock about five to seven days out, so there is time to act on the feedback. If you are short on time, prioritise AI mocks: more reps on the exact round type beat a single, expensive session.
Common mistakes
- Using a human mock before your answers are fluent, and wasting it
- Using only AI mocks and never testing yourself under real pressure
- Treating either one as a pass/fail verdict instead of practice
- Not acting on the feedback from either
Common questions
Are AI mock interviews as good as human ones?
They are good at different things. AI mocks give volume and instant feedback; human mocks add realism and calibration. Most candidates use both.
Should I pay for a human mock interview?
If budget allows, one human mock close to the real interview is a good use of money, once your answers are already fluent. Earlier on, AI practice is more cost-effective per rep.
Is Torek a live interview assistant?
No. Torek is prep-only: AI mock interviews and scored feedback before the real thing, never during it.
